Fig Newton

Hola! SuperSara here! Now, you see my title, and you're probably thinking: what the heck?! Fig newton? Well, here is a SuperSaraSuperMemory for you:

When I was about 8 or 9 I went to this camp with this girl from my school. Her last name was Newton and one day just out of the blue she said "If my first name was fig, then my name would be Fig Newton!". And for some reason, that made me crack up. All day I was annoying everyone with my laughter. So, when Mr. Sellers came to us and talked about Isaac Newton, this was the first thing that popped in my head.

Isaac Newton. Ring any bells? I know you've heard of him, everyone has. But what has he done? Gravity. Ring any more bells? Gravity is the force that attracts a body toward the center of the earth, or toward any other physical body having mass apply. But that's boring. Let's hear SuperSara's definition!

Okay... Gravity. Well gravity is the force the keeps everything on the ground. Without gravity, we'd just be floating around. The story goes that Newton was sitting under an apple tree, and an apple fell. He wondered to himself "What made that apple fall?" and the answer was gravity.

So anyways, Newton made up these things called "The Three Laws Of Motion". These basically describe, well, the three laws of motion. Let's go over them.

Isaac Newton. Isaaaaaaac. It sound like a sheep is saying it.

First Law:  An object in motion stays in motion unless acted upon by and external unbalanced force.
My definiton: Basically, if I was roller skating and someone pushed me, I would fall. This is because someone (the force) acted upon (pushed) me (the object). This is often called the law of inertia.

Second Law: The rate of change in force, speed, or movement of an object (the momentum) is directly proportional to the force acting upon it.
My definition: Okay, so Newton's second law is also stated as F= ma or force = mass x acceleration. The force (the person who pushed me and also F in the eqution) is equal to the mass (me, as in how much mass I have) multiplied by my acceleration (speed). So, let's say I was skating at 5 mph and my mass is 115, so we would multiply 115 by 5, which would be 575. So, 575= 115 x 5. I know it's very confusing, but everyone catches on eventually.

Third Law:  For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
My definition: So, let' say their was a rocket ship that was heading to Mars. The force of gravity is pulling it down, and it mass is keeping it up. But, if the rocket ship applied equal or even more force than gravity, it is able to pull itself up into space :)

Well... those are the 3 laws of Motion. Please notice I have been out of town for a week and got one day to this blog so if it isn't the best I am dearly sorry!!!! I tried my best. No video this time, sorry! Too late! SuperSaraSuperBye!! Oh yeah, here are some links too!

No... I Will Not Quote the Song!!

Why hello there whoever is reading my blog/being forced to listen!! I'm not having a very good day so if my blog isn't as good as usual, sorry. Anyways, today we are gonna be talking about SPEED! Speed, in a basic definition, is how fast something is moving. Like how fast I can run to Starbucks, or how fast the moon rotates on it's axis! ALL LIVING THINGS MOVE! YEAH! EVERY SECOND OF THE DAY! Even things that aren't alive move! By only by a living thing moving it, or wind. Anyways, Let's get this show on the road!

So... speed has this friend named Velocity. Speed and velocity are very different, much like me and my friend Fatima! (I'm sorry feebs, I had to do that!) Speed is how fast you are moving. Here's an example.

Let's say you're on a long trip to Alabama. When the accelerator on your car say 50 mph, that is how fast you are going, thus making it your speed!

Now, before we move onto velocity, another thing you should know about speed is that there are three types:

  • Instantaneous: The speed of which you are going at a certain time. So, if I were to ask you "WHAT SPEED WERE GOING ON MAY 17TH, 2004 AT 5:36 PM?!", you probably wouldn't know, *but*, if you did, it would be your instantaneous speed :)
  • Constant: Speed that never changes. The only real example I can think of that is the moon rotating on it's axis. It never gets out of breath

  • Average: When I am running a mile, there is always a big hill that gets me. So I slow down. Basically, average speed is speed that increases and decreases.

Now for velocity!!!!! Velocity is the speed and direction you are going. Let's say you were in the same car situation as above, but this time you are going 50 mph, WEST. That would be your velocity. Changes in velocity can add changes in the speed, too! Pretty easy, right?

Okay, so this is where it gets all mathematical. The formula for speed is (speed= distance/time). I know, it looks confusing, but let me explain. So, again, speed is distance divided by time. Let's say Jimmy can run 60 km in 3 seconds. So, we divide 60 by 3 to show how many fast he is going. So, Bob is going 20 kph.

Well, I think that's it and I hope there wasn't anything I forgot! Hope you guys have an awesome week! Oh yeah, if you wanna learn more, I'll post some links below! :D SuperSaraSuperBye!

and of course... my big smiley

SuperSara is Back!

Hello all my friends... I am back from a very fun summer! I hope your summer was great but now it is a new school year and I am in 8th grade! YAY!!!!!! Aaaaaaaand... I have a new logo! Well now I am going to tell you about my summer no matter how boring I am :D

End of May

  • MY BIRTHDAY!!!!
Yeah that's pretty much it for May!

June
  • Did regular kinda stuff, you know, watch movies go to the mall, hang out with friends, and go to White Water.
  • Went to my Grandpa's house in Tennessee for a week
  • Started making YouTube videos, you can watch them by searching "anabelistyping" into youtube. (Just to warn you they're pretty bad)
My favorite ride, the Tornado.
July
  • SAW HARRY POTTER!
  • Did regular stuff again
  • Made more YouTube videos
Beginning of August
  • Did more regular stuff
  • Was sad because summer was almost over
Also, during the summer, at Sparkles it would only be $3 to go on Thursday nights, so I went there with some of  my friends too! :)

Now, by going to my friend Kate's house, I have learned the art of playing Mario Kart. Haha, but really, in all seriousness (or as serious as Mario Kart can be), Mario Kart is now my favorite sport and I am quite good at it :) And I don't even have a Wii! So yes, that was a big part of my summer too! And..... BABY MARIO AND LUIGI RULE!

  Now, for my goals.

Goal 1:
I want to be less lazy. If there's a test the next day, I will study, and not go to bed because I am tired. I think that if I got an A it would be worth losing an hour of sleep.

Goal 2:
Yeah, I rrreeeeeaaaaalllllyyyyyy wanna be student council president. Ever since the beginning of 4th grade (was that really 4 years ago?) I've wanted to be. So, yes, if that happens I will be very happy :) But if it doesn't, well there's always next year!

Here's a message to myself to read at the end of this year:

Dear Anabel,
I hope you had a good year. Hope it was was fun, and that you won many bronco awards, and that you got good grades. Because after this, you have to leave, and then, there will be high school. I just want you, well myself I guess, to stay awesome, and happy, and nice. Treat people the way you would want to be treated. I think that by now (May), you will be smart enough and well prepared to make new friends and to start the 4 years that lead to the rest of your life. Never forget who your true friends are.
- the August you

Well, that's pretty much it! I am very happy to be back and I hope you guys are too! Oh yeah! I have a twitter now! You can add me at anabelisawesome! Thanks guys! Goodbye!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

again, nothing like ending it with a big smiley to start off the year! :D

RAINBOW MAGIC UNICORN HAPPINESS

HEY GUYS, IT'S ME!!!!!! BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!! Okay, so today, in the last blog post of the year, I will be talking about rainbows, because they're awesome, so don't judge! Now, there is not a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, as you think. There is no leprechaun that's gonna come and say you won the lottery and declare you the king of Ireland. That just won't happen.

So, have you ever tried to reach the end of a rainbow? Well, guess what, you can't. It's impossible. This is because rainbows are made from when the suns reflection bounces off water. We just see the colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. They are because the wavelengths in our head see these colors, and I don't know why, but they just do. So, when your walking near a rainbow, no matter how far you walk, you'll never get to it, because the sun will just keep bouncing off the water droplets. Interesting right?

Well, that was a really short topic. Like, seriously, that's really it for rainbows, as far as information goes. That's all I could findOkay, so here are some really cool animations of rainbows!!!!!!!!!!! :DDDDDDDDDDDDD

Now... PART 2!!!!!!!!!

HAHAHAHAHAHA YOU WEREN'T EXPECTING THAT WERE YOU?!?! Okay, so I'm supposed to talk about all the fun times I've had this year. I think this year was really good, and I made alot of good friends (you know who you are!!). And yes, we will all miss you, Kenneth. :D The most fun we've had has probably been man.... I don't know!!! It's all been fun, and I love how we have our own spots at lunch, and I've sat at mine for a year!! Man, it's been a good year. D: BUT NEXT YEAR WE WILL RULE THIS SCHOOL! Haha, okay, well, Rock Eagle was fun, and all the field trips, and just hanging out too! :D

Here's a video:

Well, GOODBYE UNTIL NEXT YEAR!!! PEACE OUT HOME DAWGS!! SuperSaraSuperBye!!! :DD

Some People You Might Wanna Know... ;D AND ALSO VOTE ON MY POLL!

Hey!!!!!!!!!!!! SuperSara here, with another blog! (Noooo, you thought I was gonna sell you pancakes, haha, too bad for you) Okay, so the last blog was, um, well, what I like to call a SuperSaraSuperDisappointment  D: Yeah, it was pretty bad! I admit it!! But this blog is gonna be awesomeeee!!! Ok, you guys are probably thinking "Enough with the chit-chat, let's get a move on!" I totally agree...

So today our topic is... FAMOUS SCIENTISTS!! Let's start with Francis Crick ... (who is that..? : / )

Francis Crick was born on June 8th (heyyy, that's my brother's birthday!), 1916 in North Hampton, England. He studied physics at a university in London. Then he was gonna get his Ph.D, but the war interrupted him. (UGH! STUPID WAR) He then worked as a scientists for the war, having a "connection with magnetic and acoustic mines". He left in 1947 to study biology. Over the next few years, he started helping prove the theory of the X-ray. On day in 1951, Crick's friend (James Watson) came up to him with the idea of the double-helix structure that is DNA. He has won many science awards, including a Nobel prize. Crick died on July 28th, 2004, shortly after his 88th birthday of colon cancer. D:

  Up next.... JAMES WATSON!!!

James Watson was born on April 6th,  1928 in Chicago, Illinois. He loved bird-watching as a kid, and this turned serious when he got his Ph.D in zoology in 1950. He had to learn about genetics; it was serious desire of his. In 151, he came to Francis Crick (hey, I think I've heard of him before...) with the idea of the double helix DNA blahblahblah you know this already. They win the Nobel prize together for this. He is still alive at the age of 83 years old.

And the next is... SEVERO OCHOA!!!

Severo Ochoa was born on September 24th, 1905 in Luarca, Spain. He was named after his father. He went to Malaga College. His interests were mostly biology, but also medicine. He went to medical school until 1929. He was the assistant to many scientists, mainly having to do with biochemistry and biology. He became the head of medical research, and from 1938-1941 he did research on the biology of vitamin B. When he was at Oxford he became interested in "enzymatic mechanisms of oxidative metabolism" (whatever that means) and in 1941 he moved to America. He went to another university in Washington (man, he went to college like 6 times!!!!) In 1956 he became an American citizen. He died in 1993.

Severo Ochoa

Barbara McClintock is next... OH YEAH A GIRL!!

Barbara McClintock was born on June 16, 1902 in Hartford, Connecticut. She began her studies in Cornell College of Agriculture in 1919, studying botany (plant science). Her interest in genetics began in 1921, two years before she graduated in 1923. She had taken a course in that field. She recieved her Ph.D from Cornell in 1927. In the 20's, she was working with maize (corn) chromosomes and how the change during reproduction. Her work was amazing. She produced the first genetic map of... I wouldn't of guessed it, maize! She linked regions of chromosomes with physical traits, even proving things about meiosis! (Man, who knew corn could do so much) She died on September 2, 1992 at 90 years old.

"What's genetic mutation?" "Ummmmmm...when the genes mutate?" WRONG

Heyyyyyyyyyyyy... It's me! Back with a super awesome blog post about genetic mutation. Now, this blog is gonna have alot of stuff in it, so I hope you can keep up. Today I'll be telling you about a very special man. VERY special. They call him "The Elephant Man". Spoooooooky, right? Well, in the video below, I'll tell you about him. Soooooooo.... Let's get this show on the road!

Like my picture? Hee hee... ok so genetic mutation... GO LOOK IT UP. Haha just kidding! Now for the definition:
Genetic Mutation: any event that changes genetic structure; any alteration in the inherited nucleic acid sequence of the genotype of an organism
BORING, now for my definition:
Genetic Mutation: Changes to a cell's DNA or RNA.
Better? Hope that makes it a little easier to understand. Now let me tell you a story:

Once upon a time, there was a happy couple. they had been married for five years, and their baby was due in 2 weeks. 2 WEEKS LATER OH NOES!! The baby has sickle-cell anemia! But wait... how did that happen? Mom didn't have sickle-cell anemia, and neither did Dad. Uh-oh. This is because sickle cell anemia cannot be passed down through genes, so the baby got it on his own. Darn genes!

There are many genetic mutations; most of them are bad. There's down syndrome, sickle cell anema, (of course), and so many others.

There's also another kind. A very mysterious kind. A kind man has yet to discover. What is this?, you ask. Its the disease of.... THE ELEPHANT MAN!!!! (There was a video, but it disappeared) :(

Joeseph Merrick was born August 5th, 1862 in England. As he aged, his mom started noticing things wrong with him. his hands were too big, or his head was abnormally sized. Trns out, his mom was right. Hos right hand was almost un-usable, and the right side of his head was 4x larger than it needed to be. He had to sleep sitting up, or his head would crush him. But, on April 11th, 1890, he was found dead, lying down. His head's weight was so big, it crushed well, him. Sad story, isn't it?

So, that was the elephant man. No one really knows what happened, but were sure it was a genetic mutation, which keads me to these. These are some types of genetic mutation. In this case, the letters act like genes:

Normal gene:
Bob ran up the hill.
Deletion gene:
Bob ran u the hill
Insertion:
Bob ran up the big hill
Shifted:
Bo bra nup th ehi l

I thinks that's kinda cool! Okay, so I think thta's enough for this blog post. Remember, elephant man, you can get genetic mutation by mom and dad, or by "luck". Okay, so SUPERSARASUPERBYE!!!! :DDDDDDD
